Dr. Neal R. Pellis is Senior Scientist in the Space Life Sciences Directorate (SLSD) at NASA Johnson Space Center. The SLSD mission is to be the world's leader in understanding the space frontier and the opportunities, capabilities, and limitations of humans living and working on that frontier. To accomplish that mission, the Directorate manages and implements a broad range of applied and basic scientific research. This research is accomplished using ground-based laboratories, microgravity environments, and space-analog facilities. The Directorate is responsible for both the scientific content and the associated hardware systems. The organizational structure focuses on the disciplines of Bioastronautics and Biological Sciences in accordance with the mission and lead center responsibilities of the Johnson Space Center.
Dr. Pellis received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1972 and performed his postdoctoral fellowship in Microbiology at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Dr. Pellis joined the NASA Johnson Space Center in October 1994, having previously been on the Faculty of Northwestern University Medical School, the University of Texas Medical School, and directing the Surgical Immunology Laboratory in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He retains adjunct appointments at the University of Houston College of Technology, Department of Engineering Technology; the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; the Mabee Laboratory of Biochemical and Genetic Engineering, Rice University, Houston, TX; and the University of Texas Medical Branch Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Galveston, TX. He completed a one-year assignment to NASA Headquarters as International Space Station (ISS) Program Scientist and Executive Secretary of the NASA Space Station Utilization Advisory Subcommittee (SSUAS) from May 2002 through August 2003, and as Associate Director of the Biological Sciences and Applications Office, he directed the exploration cell science effort of the Biological Systems Office until January 2005 when he became Chief Scientist for Advanced Programs. In October 2005, Dr. Pellis was named Associate Director for the Human Research Program Science Management Office. Most recently, in April 2007, he was named Senior Scientist for Space Life Sciences.
